Thanksgiving Assembly
November 5, 2021This week Sharon Allison gave an assembly on her experience with cancer. She stated that when communities seek to support someone with cancer, it is important to remember that each cancer experience is different, and each individual can choose to deal with it in their own way. Mrs. Allison shared a video of how one student deals with cancer – showing Credo’s students how resilient one can be in the face of difficulties.
Mrs. Allison went on to give her family’s background with cancer. With two family members passing after courageous battles with cancer, Revelation 21:4 gives her hope that God wipes away every tear and that one day there will be no more suffering.
This year, Mrs. Allison also recieved a cancer diagnosis. She explained that in the beginning she struggled to understand why God allowed her to have cancer. Overtime, her thinking changed from “why me”, to “why not me”. This transformation allowed her to have a better understanding of the peace that Christ has to offer, trusting that he is in charge and we can rest in him.
So what can Credo students do? There are several tools Mrs. Allison shares that we can use to support those on a cancer journey.
- Be a good listener
- Show Up
- Be Honest
- Allow your loved one to feel what they are feeling
- Bring some laughter
- Pray for them
- So why should Credo students get involved?
- Your support matters – 1 in 2 Canadians get diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
- You will make an impact – money raised helps
- You can choose how funds will be used
Mrs. Allison wrapped up by encouraging students to live their life for Christ now.
